Cultivating the capacity to respond
Our world is in crisis — climate disruption, social fragmentation, economic instability, technology upheaval and geopolitical turbulence all converging at once.
As relational beings, we’re not built to face uncertainty, loss or crisis in isolation. When faced alone, the weight of global events can trigger us into avoidance, overwhelm or shut-down, affecting our relationships, wellbeing and capacity to respond.
This calls for new learning modality, one rooted in community.
Social regeneration
The World Within Us is a social regeneration initiative focused on gathering people together to notice how the world’s challenging events live within us, not as information or opinion but as embodied experience.
The methodology underpinning this initiative is Global Social Witnessing, a collective relational practice developed by Thomas Hübl - trauma expert, international group facilitator and author.
In a structured group setting, practitioners are gently invited to move from bystander to active witness through slowing down and paying attention to internal reactions in relation to the social and systemic realities that evoke them.
Relational spaces to digest experience
GSW works at the level of the group, creating a relational space that is rarely available in modern life — where difficult global realities can be consciously turned towards together, where we sit with pain and suffering – yours and mine - without following the impulse to interpret or fix.
Through hearing many voices speak of their response to what was witnessed, a shared capacity emerges to hold and process what would otherwise be too much to bear alone. This builds personal and collective awareness, deepens understanding of ourselves and others and strengthens the ability to stay present with difficulty, uncertainty and complexity. It also fosters a sense of connection and belonging.
The quality of our inner response to the world matters.
Through moving from reactivity to presence and from isolation to connection, GSW supports whole groups to meet the crises in our world with clarity and compassion. With practice, questions of responsibility, participation and action naturally arise.
